Correctional Deputy
The Corrections Division oversees the operation of the 614 bed county jail and other inmate-related programs. With an average daily population of over 540 inmates, the Butte County Jail is the largest county correctional facility north of Sacramento. Corrections Division staff supervise and care for inmates within the jail by providing for their safety, security, and basic needs.

The new facility, scheduled for completion by the end of 2025, is being constructed on a 3.35-acre site adjacent to the existing buildings. All inmate intake and booking operations will be relocated to this state-of-the-art facility. The new construction will replace the current intake and booking areas and will add a total of 134 beds—96 for general population housing and 38 for medical and mental health care. The medical/mental health unit will also include dedicated programming space, with the entire facility encompassing approximately 40,000 square feet.

Correctional Deputy I
This is an entry-level class in the Correctional Deputy Series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform routine correctional duties.
Salary
Earn up to $110,000.00 a year*.
*Including incentives and longevity pay. Starting July 2028 earn up to $126,000.00 a year.

Certifications and Licenses
- Must possess a valid US driver’s license upon date of application. Must obtain California driver’s license following hire date per California DMV regulations.
- Must complete the Board of State and Community Corrections (B.S.C.C.) Adult Corrections Officer Core Course by the end of the probationary period.
- Possession of a certificate of completion of Penal Code 832 Course in Arrest, Search and Seizure issued by California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training by the end of the probationary period.
- Possession of First Aid and CPR certification within twelve (12) months of employment.

Examination Process
Participate in a Physical Agility Test, Written Test, and Oral Board interview.
Polygraph
Commonly known as a lie detector test, this examination assesses an applicant’s honesty and verifies the accuracy of the information provided in their Personal History Statement.
Background Investigation
A thorough review of an applicant’s personal, professional, and criminal history to determine their suitability for a position in law enforcement.
Interview
The Sheriff and members of the Command Staff evaluate a candidate’s qualifications, character, and readiness to join the agency.
Offer of Employment
A conditional job offer is extended, pending a psychological and medical evaluation to determine a candidates psychological and physical suitability in law enforcement. An employment start date is established upon successful completion of these exams.

Correctional Deputy II
This is the journey-level class in the Correctional Deputy Series responsible for performing the full range of assigned duties to ensure proper custody, care, compliance and overall safety and security of inmates in the assigned facility.
Salary
Earn up to $115,000.00 a year*.
*Including incentives and longevity pay. Starting July 2028 earn up to $132,000.00 a year.
