Deputy Sheriff Lateral
Under general supervision, performs a wide variety of peace officer duties involving the protection of life and property, enforcement of laws and ordinances, criminal investigation, crime prevention and suppression, case preparation and testimony, and providing information and assistance to the public; and performs related duties as assigned.
Salary
Earn up to $155,000.00 a year*.
*Includes incentives and longevity pay. Starting July 2028 earn up to $179,000.00 a year.

Special Requirements
- Be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law or qualify for Peace Officer status under California Government Code Section 1031; be at least 21 years of age; not have been convicted of a felony.
- Be free from any physical, emotional or mental condition which might adversely affect exercise of peace officer powers, as determined by a licensed examining authority in accordance with California Government Code Section 1031.
- Meet all requirements for peace officer status that are mandated by the California Government Code and Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) regulations.
- Pass a background investigation conducted in compliance with California Government Code Section 1031, to the satisfaction of the Sheriff-Coroner.
- Possession of a valid California Driver License by date of appointment.

Deputy Sheriff Trainee
Deputy Sheriff Trainee
The Deputy Sheriff Trainee is an entry-level position within the County law enforcement series. Under close supervision, trainees attend a basic academy program designed to fulfill the requirements for Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification. They also perform related duties as assigned. Successful completion of the academy is required to advance to Deputy Sheriff status.
Salary
Deputy Sheriff Trainees get an hourly rate of $31.23/hr while attending the academy. Upon graduation from the academy, they are “promoted” to Deputy Sheriff and become eligible to earn up to $155,000 a year*.

Examination Process
Participate in a Physical Agility Test, Written Test, and Oral Board interview.
Polygraph
Commonly known as a lie detector test, this examination assesses an applicant’s honesty and verifies the accuracy of the information provided in their Personal History Statement.
Background Investigation
A thorough review of an applicant’s personal, professional, and criminal history to determine their suitability for a position in law enforcement.
Interview
The Sheriff and members of the Command Staff evaluate a candidate’s qualifications, character, and readiness to join the agency.
Offer of Employment
A conditional job offer is extended, pending a psychological and medical evaluation to determine a candidates psychological and physical suitability in law enforcement. An employment start date is established upon successful completion of these exams.
