Hiring Process
Butte County uses the California state and federal preference systems, which provide 5 or 10 preference points to eligible veterans on open examinations. To claim preference, you must submit a copy of your DD-214 at the time of application for a non-promotional examination. For state employment, you may also need to complete a CalHR 1093 form.
Submit a DD-214
Include a copy of your DD-214 (Member 4 copy is often preferred) with your application when you apply for a job. Ensure the character of the service is included.
Complete the Preference Application
For government employment, you will need to fill out the CalHR 1093 form and submit it along with your DD-214.
Do Not Submit Late
Preference points are only added to those who pass the exam and are qualified. Submissions after the final filing date will not be accepted.
Preference Point Eligibility
5-Point Preference
Generally, for those who meet certain service requirements, such as serving during a specific period (e.g., between September 11, 2001, and August 31, 2010) or earning a campaign badge.
10-Point Preference
For veterans with a service-connected disability or who have received a Purple Heart.
Important Note
For disabled veterans, you will need to provide official VA documentation stating you have a service-connected, compensable disability.
Reservists
The Butte County Sheriff’s Office proudly supports our reservists by providing flexible scheduling and protected leave, ensuring they can fulfill their military duties without impacting their law enforcement careers. We recognize their dual service and honor the dedication they show to both their country and our community.
